Curriculum:

Prophets as Builders

The Word of God is abounding with examples of prophets who were effective builders. Building is used here not to indicate the prophet’s activity as much as it describes their purpose, context of operations, and grace/ability. Every person who is called to be a prophet has been deeply coded by God to build; therefore they will not experience fulfillment by operating on the level of blessing only.

Prophets who were builders include:

  • Haggai & Zechariah stood alongside of the elders of the Jews who were rebuilding the city of Jerusalem, and the building prospered through the prophesying of the prophets’
    (Ezra 5:2 & 6:14).
  • John the Baptist built a more just society in order to prepare the way for the coming of the Lord (Luke 3:1-18). His building power impacted the sociological, economic, legal, IR and political realms.
  • Moses built a nation with clear prescriptions for social interaction, legal remedies and a privately funded welfare system (Lev-Deut).
  • Samuel built a prophetic bandwidth in the nation of Israel that began with ‘no open vision or revelation’ and ended with an entire company of prophets trained to minister to the people as well as to kings.
  • Jeremiah built a correct mentality about the series of international events in the region, empowering the people of God to respond correctly to the dealings of God which lie behind the geo-political movements of nations.
  • Elijah built a correct system of worship that broke the power of idolatry, and brought the people back to service of the Most High God.
  • Daniel built a political system based on deep spiritual insight which produced systemic influence in the middle of Babylonian wickedness.

In this period of time, the prophetic has shifted into a building dimension as a direct result of its correct relational alignment with the apostolic. In fact, the ability of prophets to build is directly proportional to their relational proximity to apostolic grace. Therefore, what I call “relevant competence” becomes more important and valuable than the individual strength of the prophets gifting.
